Say what you do in one sentence
Here's a small skill with a big payoff: being able to say what you do in one clear sentence.
Watch what happens at any gathering. Someone asks "so what do you do?" and most people either ramble or shrink. "Oh, I was in insurance, now I'm sort of... figuring things out."
That moment is pure gold, and most of us waste it.
So let me give you a simple formula. Two parts: who you help, and what you help them do.
"I help [these people] with [this problem]."
That's it. Watch how it transforms things.
Not: "I worked in HR for 25 years." Instead: "I help small business owners handle tricky staff situations without landing in legal trouble."
Not: "I was a teacher." Instead: "I help stressed parents get their kids reading again."
See the difference? The first is a job title. The second makes the other person go, "Oh — actually, my brother could use that."
And here's the part that matters. You're not bragging. You're making it easy for people to connect you to someone who needs you. They can't do that if all they've got is your old title.
So try it. Write your one sentence today. Who do you help, and with what? Fiddle with it until it sounds like a human, not a résumé.
It'll feel strange at first. Then it'll open doors you didn't know were closed.
